What to Know Before You Buy Carpet

(WMS) - There are many things to consider if you're in the market for a new carpet. How does it look in the room? How it feels on your feet? Is it stain-resistant and easy-to-clean? However, according to the experts from Solutia, the makers of Wear-Dated® carpet fiber, it's important to keep in mind that there are a few more important factors that should play into your decision as to which carpet to purchase -- the warranty and the padding.

All Warranties Are Not The Same
Some warranties are prorated, meaning they only pay a portion of the value of the carpet if there is a problem or it becomes damaged, and the amount that can be claimed becomes smaller each year. Read the warranty information carefully. If there's any part of the document you don't understand, contact the manufacturer or ask someone in the store for help before you put down any money.

Choose A Good Carpet Pad
A carpet pad provides comfort and serves as a shock absorber for your carpet, extending its life. But be careful, a pad that's too thick or soft will sink with each footstep, and pull on the carpet backing -- actually reducing the life of your carpet. A thin (no more than 7/16"), dense pad will prevent wear on the carpet. Carpet construction also affects padding choices. Follow the carpet manufacturer's recommendations.

It's also important to verify that the pad is water-resistant. Otherwise, the carpet's color may bleed through if it gets wet. Happy shopping!
